Search tips to power your search.
To focus your search and quickly find the most relevant information you can give LOIS specific instructions:
“Phrase search” To search for a phrase, add speech marks to narrow down your results.
For example, “Advances in Ceramic Armor” will return fewer, more specific results than Advances in Ceramic Armor
Operators are connecting words which instruct LOIS to narrow or widen the search:
AND operator Use either the word AND followed by a space or & symbol to narrow down a set of results.
For example, to find records containing all the words Sintering and Zirconia, enter either:
-
Sintering AND Zirconia
-
Sintering & Zirconia
-
Sintering Zirconia (LOIS will use AND by default)
All the above will return the same number of results.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OR operator Use the word OR between words to widen your search and increase the number of results.
For example, to find records containing either Ceramic Matrix Composite or CMC, enter:
-
"Ceramic Matrix Composite" OR CMC
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOT operator Use the word NOT between words to narrow your search when you have identified a word you don’t want.
For example, to find records containing the word Sintering but not the word Zirconia, enter:
-
Sintering NOT Zirconia
Be careful using this, as you may remove some useful results. For example, where both zirconia and another material are in the same record.

Truncation Truncation allows you to search for variations of a word by adding an exclamation mark (!)
For example, if you type alumin! Into the search box, LOIS will search for alumina, aluminium, aluminous and aluminate etc.
